Your Gut’s Been Trying to Text You But Your Brain Keeps Putting It on Silent

The body speaks

You know that moment when you read an email from a colleague, perfectly polite on the surface, but your jaw locks before you’ve even scrolled to the end?

Your body read the subtext before your brain caught up.

That’s your emotional “first responder” system in action. And it often knows more than your inner analyst.

We’re taught that thoughts come first, that thinking is what makes us human. But neuroscience tells a different story.

Before you think, you feel.

When something happens – a tone of voice, a slammed door, a long pause in a conversation – the first part of your brain to respond isn’t the rational, verbal one.

It’s your limbic system: fast, ancient, and entirely uninterested in your spreadsheet.

It sends out a chemical cocktail – hormones and neurotransmitters – that trigger physical changes: a twist in your stomach, tight shoulders, shallow breath, heat in your face. These sensations are your body’s way of saying: “Something important is happening. Pay attention.”

And yet, most of us are experts at ignoring those signals.

I grew up in England, where we’re trained to handle feelings the way the royal family handles awkward relatives: assign them a quiet estate and issue no further comment.

I had to learn to pay attention to my stomach clenching in the middle of a conversation –  instead of assuming it was indigestion.

In Clarification Coaching, we treat emotional pain like physical pain: a signal that needs attention, not suppression.

We start with the body. We work with emotion, not against it. Because emotions aren’t irrational, they’re just fast.

If the rational mind is the PR department, emotions are security staff.
And your body? It’s the only one on the team that never lies.

So if you keep finding yourself stuck, overthinking, or emotionally short-circuiting,  maybe your inner SWAT team is trying to tell you something.

Want to see how this works in practice? Or feel free to message me if something in your gut is whispering: “Maybe this is it.”

Sometimes the clearest voice in the room isn’t the one in your head.
It’s the one in your body. You just have to stop muting it.
